Our eco village is a riverside stay inside the Sundarbans, on the island of Satjelia in West Bengal, built deliberately light on a landscape that cannot take heavy building. Every cottage, basic through premium, is made from earth, bamboo and hay by people who live here, and every one has an attached washroom with running water and a western commode.
It is where all our overnight packages stay, and you can also book it on its own if you want the delta without a fixed itinerary. Mornings are birds and river light. Afternoons are the paddy fields and the village. Evenings are food cooked on site and, more often than not, someone singing.

Basic Cottage

Attached washroom with running water and western commode, fan, lights and charging points. Hot water is provided in buckets. Available as twin, triple, four, six and eight person cottages, which makes it the practical choice for families and larger groups. Comfortable without air conditioning from November through February.

Deluxe Cottage

Everything in the basic cottage plus air conditioning, with an immersion rod for hot water. Available as twin, triple and four person. The sensible choice from March onward, when the delta gets warm and humid.

Premium Organic Cottage

Our best cottage on both comfort and looks, with better mattresses, air conditioning, fan, lights and charging points. Still built entirely from local material, so it stays close to the landscape while giving you the comforts you would want after a long day on the water. Twin and triple only.

What There Is To Do Here?

The village and the paddy fields

A walk out from the cottages takes you past the homes of honey collectors and fishing families. This is a working community at the edge of a tiger reserve, not a heritage display.

Country boat rides

Out through the narrow creeks for birdwatching. Seven species of kingfisher live here, along with egrets, Brahminy kites, pond herons and cormorants. The best of these rides end at sunset.

Bonobibi Pala and local music

Most evenings bring musicians with their old instruments, or a performance of the Bonobibi Pala, the folk drama of the forest goddess and the tiger deity that the whole delta shares.

Jungle safaris

We arrange motorised boat safaris into the tiger reserve, covering Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali and Dobanki, along with all the permits.

Doing nothing

A fair number of guests spend an afternoon on the riverside and count it as the best part of the trip.

Why It Is Built The Way It Is?

The Sundarbans is a fragile tidal system and concrete does not belong in it. Building with earth, bamboo and hay keeps the cottages cool without mechanical help, keeps the construction reversible, and keeps the money and the work with local craftspeople.
It is also, frankly, a nicer place to sleep than a concrete room would be. You hear the river.

Getting Here

The eco village is on the island of Satjelia. From Kolkata it is about three and a half hours by road to Godkhali, and from Godkhali either an hour and a half across Gosaba island or a direct engine boat of two and a half to three hours depending on the tide.
Transfers are included in all our tour packages. If you are booking the cottage on its own, tell us and we will arrange the transfer.

Can you stay at the eco village without booking a tour package?

Yes. The eco village is where all our overnight packages stay, and you can also book a cottage on its own if you would rather set your own pace. Tell us your dates and group size and we will confirm availability and rates.

What meals are served at the Sundarban eco village?

Home-style Bengali food cooked on site, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options and evening tea with snacks. A typical lunch is rice, dal, three vegetables, papad, chutney, salad and fish curry. Dietary requirements can be catered for with notice.

What is there to do at the eco village besides the jungle safari?

Paddy field and village walks, country boat rides through the creeks, birdwatching from the riverside, and local folk performances in the evening. Many guests find the village and river time as memorable as the safari itself.
