Which Month Is Best to Visit Sundarbans? An Honest Answer
By Tour De Sundarbans | 10 min read
People ask me which month is best to visit Sundarbans before they ask anything else. Not which package. Not which boat. The month. That tells you how much this trip depends on timing.
Most guides say October to March and stop there. That is half the story. We run trips all year from our eco village on Satjelia island. What changes month to month is not whether the delta is worth seeing. It is the heat, the crowds and the wildlife.
Here is the honest answer, month by month.
What changes month to month
Month | What the delta is like | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
October | The monsoon is easing, nights turn cooler, migratory birds arrive around Durga Puja | First-timers who want green forest and fewer people |
November to February | Cool days, peak birdlife, animals seen more often near the water. This is the busy season | Almost everyone, if you book early |
February to March | Mild weather, thinning crowds, good light for photography | Travellers who want winter without the December rush |
April to June | Hot and humid, Kaal Boishakhi thunderstorms, long nights, wildlife drawn to the rivers | Repeat visitors and photographers |
July to September | Monsoon. Green, quiet and wet. The Hilsa festival runs in this window | Travellers who want the delta to themselves |
September | The turn back towards the open season, still quiet | Anyone who likes a calm forest |
Nothing here says the reserve shuts. The official Sundarban Tiger Reserve booking office says eco-tourism at Sundarban is open through the year. Check the current position for your dates before you travel. Routes and watchtowers are set by the Tiger Reserve authority and can change on the day.
October to November: the turn of the season
October is when the delta slides out of the monsoon. The nights get cooler. The humidity drops. The forest starts drying at the edges.
The water level in the creeks drops too. That exposes the mudflats. Crocodiles bask on them and deer come down to drink. For photographers this is the best of both worlds. Green forest behind, dry mud in front.
The birds arrive
This is when the migrants show up. Birds come to the Sundarbans from as far as the Himalayas, Australia, Mongolia, South Africa and Siberia. They stay for the winter.
October and November give you the arrivals. December to February give you the numbers. For a first visit, this window is kind on weather and light on crowds.
December to January: peak season, with eyes open
This is what most people mean by the best time. Cool days, chilly evenings, animals coming down to the water to drink. The river is at its calmest, so the long boat hours are easy.
It is also the busiest window of the year. The jetties feel it and the watchtowers feel it.
Crowds and how to dodge them
Two things help. Book early, because the good dates go first. And come midweek rather than at the weekend. The weekend boats are the crowded ones.
One more tip for December. Think about which watchtowers you care about. The popular ones fill up by mid-morning in peak weeks. An early start puts you ahead of the queue at the tower, and back on a quiet creek while everyone else waits.
If you want December weather without December crowds, come late January. It is the quietest stretch of the cold season and the birdlife is still at its best.
If you are still choosing dates, our tour packages page shows which trip fits how many days you have.
February to March: the quiet favourite
Ask the guides and the old guests which month they would pick. February comes up more than December.
The cold has softened. The crowds have thinned. The late afternoon light on the water is as good as it gets all year.
March is when the heat starts building. If you travel in March or later, book a cottage with air conditioning. From November to February a fan is fine in our basic cottages. From March onward it is not. Sleep matters after a long day on the boat.
April to June: heat, storms and long nights
Summer here is not for everyone, and we say that plainly. The days are hot and sticky. The forest feels heavy.
But locals and repeat guests love this stretch. There is a weather window called Kaal Boishakhi. It brings thunderstorm cyclones and rare natural events, and the wildlife comes to the rivers to drink.
The nights are longer, so the island’s night life gets better. The bullfrogs call. The fireflies come out at the mangrove edge. On the right night the water in the narrow channels turns luminous with plankton.
What about the heat on the boat
The boats have covered decks and open decks. You can move between shade and sun. Take the early starts seriously. The forest is most awake around 6:30 in the morning and again near 5 in the evening. A trip that catches both of those hours beats a trip that misses them.
July to September: the case for the monsoon
Most people assume the Sundarbans shuts in the monsoon. It does not. The forest department runs tourism through the year. We run our trips through the rains too.
The Hilsa festival
In this window we run what we call the Hilsa festival. It is a getaway built around the Ilish fish, cooked the way the delta cooks it.
The place is at its greenest and least crowded. You see the Sundarbans close to its raw state. The other monsoon gift is the sky. The island has almost no light, and the clearest view of the stars comes just after a rain shower. Bring a light rain jacket. Accept that plans flex with the weather. You will have the delta mostly to yourself.
What the calendar cannot tell you
Two things matter more than the month on the calendar. Most guides never mention them.
Tides
The delta breathes twice a day. The same creek is a wide muddy plain at low tide and a full brown river at high tide. This is why routes inside the reserve are set by the authority on the day. A good operator works from the tide chart before the printed plan.
Ask any operator how the tide changes your route. If the answer is vague, that tells you what you need to know. We plan the day around the tide, not around the brochure.
Tuesday closures
Watchtowers in the Sundarbans have been closed on Tuesdays since 2023. On a Tuesday the boats run a river and creek route instead. That is still a fine day. But it is not a watchtower day. Check the day of the week before you book. We have put the whole Sundarban permit process in one place, including what you need to carry.
Hours on the water
Here is the plainest thing we tell anyone. More time on the water is the only thing that meaningfully improves your odds of seeing a tiger. The month helps at the edges. The hours help a lot. One day trip gets you six to eight hours in the jungle. A three day trip gets you several mornings and evenings. The difference shows.

Frequently asked questions
Which month is best to visit Sundarbans? November to February gives you the coolest weather, the calmest rivers and the most birdlife. That is why it is the busiest window. If you want fewer people, late January, February and March are the sweet spot. The monsoon months are quiet, green and open to visitors too.
How many days are enough for Sundarban? One day is enough to see the delta and reach a couple of watchtowers. Two nights and three days is where the trip stops feeling like a sample. You get a full day inside the reserve plus the good hours at both ends. If a tiger is your main reason, give the forest more days rather than more comfort.
Is it safe to visit Sundarban now? Yes, with the standard arrangements. Boats stay on permitted routes set by the authority. Every boat carries an escort guide. The practical concerns are sun, mosquitoes and a long day on the water. Mobile signal on the islands is patchy, so tell people at home you will be slow to reply.
Is Sunderban worth visiting? Yes, and it is worth it even if you never see a tiger. Estuarine crocodiles on the mudflats. Spotted deer at the water’s edge. Seven kinds of kingfisher. The tide coming and going twice a day. The Bonobibi Pala folk play in the evening. Most guests say the second morning on the water is when the place clicks.
What is a good itinerary for a 2-day trip to Sundarban? Reach the eco village on Satjelia island by early afternoon. Walk the village and paddy fields. Take a country boat out for birds and sunset. See the Bonobibi Pala after dinner. Day two is the safari. Start early, cover the watchtowers, eat lunch on board, and head back from late afternoon. Our 1 Night 2 Days page has the full timetable.
