Is one day enough for the Sundarbans?

Sundarbans Package

One day gets you the delta, not the depth. You cross the Bidya and Datta rivers, enter the reserve past the Sajnekhali forest office, and reach two watchtowers. You will almost certainly see kingfishers, egrets, herons, cormorants and sandpipers, and with reasonable luck, estuarine crocodiles and spotted deer on the mudflats.
What one day does not give you is the second and third safari that meaningfully raise tiger sighting odds, or the village and eco village side of Sundarban life. If tiger sighting is the reason for the trip, book the 2 Nights 3 Days instead. If a day in the mangroves is the point, this is the right tour and it is honestly priced.

What You Will See?

The Sundarbans is a birdwatcher’s forest before it is a tiger forest. Across a single day on the water you can expect seven species of kingfisher, egrets, pond herons, cormorants, sandpipers and Brahminy kites working the banks. Estuarine crocodiles bask on the mudflats at low tide, and spotted deer and wild boar come down to the water’s edge to drink.
Royal Bengal Tigers live throughout this reserve and are seen from these boats, but the Sundarban tiger is a swimming, mangrove-dwelling animal in cover too dense to see into. Treat a sighting as a possibility, not a promise.

Price

Rs. 3,000 per person, plus 5% GST.
Non-Indian passport holders pay forest permit fees separately, at rates set by the Tiger Reserve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one day enough to see the Sundarbans?

One day is enough to experience the mangrove delta and reach two watchtowers, but not enough for a serious tiger safari. A single day gives you one boat safari of six to eight hours. The 2 Nights 3 Days package gives you multiple safaris across different zones, which is where sighting chances actually improve.

What time does the Sundarban 1 day tour start and finish?

Pickup from your Kolkata hotel is between 5:30 and 6:00 am. You board the boat around 9:00 am after a three hour drive, enter the reserve at 10:30 am, and begin the return journey at 5:00 pm. You are back in Kolkata between 8:00 and 8:30 pm.

How much does a 1 day Sundarban tour from Kolkata cost?

Rs. 3,000 per person plus 5% GST. That covers Kolkata pickup and drop, the safari boat, forest permits, breakfast, lunch and evening tea. Non-Indian passport holders pay forest permit fees separately at rates set by the Tiger Reserve.

Can you see a tiger on a one day Sundarban tour?

It is possible but unlikely. The Sundarban Royal Bengal Tiger is a swimming, mangrove-dwelling tiger and sightings are rare on any single safari. What you will reliably see is estuarine crocodiles, spotted deer, wild boar, monitor lizards and a wide range of birds including kingfishers, herons, egrets and cormorants.

Is the one day Sundarban tour suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes. The boat has a covered lower deck for resting, a washroom and a kitchen, and there is no trekking involved. The main consideration is the length of the day: roughly fifteen hours door to door, with three hours of road travel at each end.

What is the difference between the 1 day tour and the 1 night 2 days package?

The 1 day tour is one safari with no overnight stay, at Rs. 3,000. The 1 Night 2 Days package adds a night at our eco village, a sunset country boat ride, a village walk, a folk performance and a second morning safari covering three watchtowers, from Rs. 4,400.
