A note on the first afternoon
Resist the urge to rest after lunch on day one. The paddy field walk and the country boat ride that follow are the gentlest introduction to the delta you’ll get, and the light on the creek towards sunset is the best of the whole day.
Most trips to the Sundarbans are described by their watchtowers. The towers matter, but they aren’t what people talk about when they come home from a few days on Satjelia. They talk about the tea after the boat ride, the kingfishers on the creek, the village at night, and waking up already beside the water.

Where is Satjelia, and who lives there?
Satjelia is one of the inhabited islands bordering the Sundarban Tiger Reserve, in the Gosaba block of South 24 Parganas.
An island at the forest’s edge
It’s a large island with a real population. One research profile of the island puts it at approximately 42,000 people, and describes it as part of Sir Daniel Hamilton’s old Gosaba estate, run as a cooperative until the 1960s. Paddy fields, ponds, schools and markets sit behind the embankments, and the forest begins across the river.
Honey collectors and fishing families
The eco village sits among the homes of honey collectors and fishermen. Honey collectors, known as moulis, go into the forest for wild honey each year between March and May, when fishing is prohibited, and Sundarban honey received a geographical indication tag in India in 2024. It’s dangerous work, and it shapes a great deal of island life.
The forest office across the water
The forest office sits directly across the river from the village, which is where our boats complete their permits before a safari. It’s a small detail with a big effect: the boat is at the reserve’s door before the day starts.

Why the route is picked on the day
The tide decides which way is faster on a given day, so the team makes the call at the jetty rather than fixing it in advance.
Pickup and timing
Departure from Kolkata is at 8:00 am, with a second pickup at Science City at 9:00 am. Breakfast is served on the road around 9:00 am, and you reach the village in time for a late lunch.

You get both good hours
The forest is most active in the early morning and late afternoon. A stay gives you both, on more than one day.
The night becomes part of the trip
There’s very little artificial light on the island. On a clear night the sky fills with stars, and fireflies move along the mangrove edge.
Day one: arriving on the island
The first afternoon is deliberately unhurried. It’s about getting your eye in.
Lunch and a first walk
You reach the village between 1:30 and 2:30 pm for a home cooked lunch of rice, dal, three vegetables, papad, chutney, salad and fish curry, with a vegetarian option. Around 3:00 pm, a walk takes you through the paddy fields and the village, past households going about the afternoon.
The country boat ride
Next comes a country boat ride of one to two hours through the creeks. Seven species of kingfisher live here, along with egrets, Brahminy kites, pond herons and cormorants. The ride finishes with sunset over the water.
Tea, music and dinner
Back at the village around 6:00 pm, there’s black tea and freshly fried vegetable pakoras. At 7:00 pm, local musicians play their old instruments, and guests are welcome to try them. Dinner is between 8:30 and 9:00 pm.
Day two: a full day inside the reserve
This is the long day, and the reason you stayed on the island in the first place.
The early start
You set off at 6:30 am on one of our four boats. Because you’re already on the island, the first hours on the water are spent looking rather than travelling.
Three watchtowers
Over the day, you visit the Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali and Dobanki watchtowers, cruising the channels between them and watching the banks for deer, wild boar, crocodiles and birds. A tiger is possible and never promised.
Meals on the move
Lunch is served on board at around 1:30 pm while the boat keeps cruising. Tea and snacks come at 4:30 pm, and you’re back at the village by 5:00 pm.
Who is Bonobibi, and why does the island stage her story?
On the evening of day two, the village hosts either a local music session or a performance of the Bonobibi Pala, with snacks and herbal tea.
The goddess of the forest
Bonobibi is the lady of the forest, worshipped by both Hindu and Muslim families in the Sundarbans. Her rival is Dakshin Rai, the lord of the south, who takes the form of a tiger.
Why forest workers call on her
An essay in the Environment and Society Portal’s Arcadia series describes how forest workers identify with the boy Dukhe from the Bonobibi story and pray to her for protection before entering the forest. The text they recite, the Johuranama, was written in the late nineteenth century and draws on a much older Bengali poem.
What the evening is like
The Pala is a sound and light folk play that tells how Bonobibi protects Dukhe from Dakshin Rai. On an island where honey collectors and fishermen still enter tiger country for a living, it’s a story that belongs to the audience as much as the performers.
Day three: the slow morning
The last day is kept light on purpose, so the trip ends calmly rather than in a rush.
A walk or the lily pond
Early morning is a village walk or a visit to the lily pond, depending on what the tide is doing and how you feel after the long safari day.
Breakfast and the return
Breakfast is at 9:00 to 9:30 am, followed by the return journey. You reach the jetty around 12:00 pm and are back in Kolkata between 3:00 and 3:30 pm, early enough for an evening train.

Why there is some concrete
The delta gets cyclonic weather every year. A cottage that can’t stand up to a storm isn’t sustainable, however it looks, so structural concrete is used where it’s needed and kept to a minimum everywhere else.
Choosing a cottage
Basic cottages have fans and hot water supplied in buckets, and the six and eight person ones come with two washrooms, which suits families. Deluxe adds air conditioning. Is 2 nights 3 days the right length for you?
It’s right if
You’re visiting the Sundarbans for the first time and want to see it properly, you’re travelling with children or older parents who shouldn’t do fifteen hours of travel in one day, or you want both the forest and the village.
Go shorter if
You can only spare a weekend. One night still gets you the island afternoon and a full safari day, at the cost of a late return to Kolkata.
Go longer if
The forest itself is the point. A 3 nights 4 days trip adds more safari days and can reach circuits a 2 nights 3 days itinerary doesn’t.

Three days on Satjelia isn’t really about ticking off watchtowers, although you’ll see three of them.
